When I was a child, my Mom used to theme each week with something new so that we would learn about cultures, the planet, nature, foods and much more. There’s one week, in particular, that was always my favorite, and that was Pioneer week. Simply because I knew we would get to make homemade butter. Simply using heavy (or “whipping”) cream in a mason jar, we would sit and shake and shake until the cream would become thick. Then we’d shake it some more until it had become whipped cream. Then continue that shake, and suddenly, almost magically – the cream would separate. There would be butter, and the clearish looking milk called buttermilk. Drain it off, and mix with salt…and we had made butter. It tastes nothing like the kinds of butter I’d had from the store. It was so much more creamy, flavorful, and rich. If it wasn’t for all the shaking, I’d might of made it daily just for a taste of it.

Jump to now, and craft butter is becoming a thing. But it’s not just shaking cream in mason jars, it’s infusing it with flavors to create new and incredible combinations that you probably couldn’t even imagine. When it comes to trying this out for yourself, here’s the best recipes we found to suggest you try!

1. Strawberry Butter

Beyond the pretty pink appearance, this butter skips the need for jam, creating a spread that is perfectly used to spread on a variety of foods.

Whether you smear it on pancakes, spread it on toast, biscuits, bagels, rice cakes or muffins, this recipe is a simple 3 ingredients that you likely already have in your cupboard. Need a quick hostess gift? Make a jar of this and accent with ribbon, it will be a simple, inexpensive but thoughtful gift to give your host when you arrive at your next event.

2. Cinnamon Vanilla Honey Butter

If you’ve ever visited a local steakhouse, it’s often that you’re greeted by your server with a bowl of hot rolls, accompanied by the most incredible butter – it’s sweet, and with cinnamon and it’s the bomb.

Save your dollars and stay home and make this butter easily that you can enjoy for weeks on end. Popular with kids, it can even be sent in small containers in their lunchboxes with some rolls as a side to keep their day extra sweet.

3. Whipped Cinnamon Pumpkin Butter

Another cinnamon infused butter option – but this time made a little extra indulgent with the use of pumpkin. Whipped to make the perfect accompaniment for everything from toast to waffles – this is a recipe that will delight far past the fall season!

Made in just 10 minutes and a few ingredients, it’s also a great way to use up that leftover pumpkin puree from that last recipe you tried.

4. Lemon Butter

Lemon butter may be something you’re probably wondering what the heck you’d even be using it on. That is, of course…until you start thinking about a sweet and zesty lemon butter atop a warm biscuit.

This will be an amazing accompaniment to your breakfast or brunch table. Or keep on hand to add a little zest to your daily snacks.

5. Vegan Butter Substitute

Yes, even vegans can get in on the action of homemade butter. While it seems like margarine would be the obvious choice for vegans, most kinds of margarine actually still contain dairy – making it a rather frustrating thing to replicate.

That said, this recipe combines coconut oil, non-dairy unsweetened milk (such as almond, or oat) along with some canola or olive oil and some sea salt to create a butter in a blender that is just as glorious as the regular kind.

6. Garlic Herb Butter

An obvious choice to make when choosing a flavored butter, but you may be underestimating how many things this butter is good for!

From pasta to garlic toasts, having this on hand makes your chef life just that much easier with a butter already infused with the flavors you’d typically need to add to your dish separately.

7. Dill Compound Butter

This is a great one to have ready when you have a seafood dish to serve up. Or, like the recipe suggests – make your vegetables pop as a side dish when garnished with this delicious dill butter.

Simply whipped butter and fresh dill along with a little bit of salt and rolled in parchment, you can create a sliced butter that’s perfect for serving.

8.  Bacon Onion Butter

The next time you have a crunchy savory roll of artisan bread, make sure you have this butter prepared to enjoy on it. The recipe also suggests that it’s quite amazing melted over some grilled meats such as steak or chicken.

With butter, bacon, onion, Worcestershire sauce, pepper and garlic powder – a smoky, creamy, savory butter is created that you might find yourself using more often than not!

9. Spicy Buffalo Butter

I think we would all use this fairly regularly if it were made and hanging out in our fridges. Whether you drizzle it over chicken wings or dip some steamed broccoli into it, once this butter is in your life – you won’t be without it.

This butter is made perfect with a classic wing combo of blue cheese and hot sauce. Amazing!

10. Chipotle Butter

You’ve never had corn on the cob until you’ve had it with chipotle butter. Make this butter at home before your next barbeque and win over your diners when they roll their cobs into this spicy but mild butter.

This recipe creates it perfectly with chopped chipotles (which you can buy canned), and some chives or green onions. Whip together, then wrap and roll and harden it in the fridge!

11. Flavored Butter Party Favors

This genius blogger made her flavored butter into the table setting party favors for her guests. Making two different flavors of butter, labeling them and placing on the plate of each setting, guests are treated to their choice of Honey Butter or Chipotle Butter.

Recipes are included here, but we love the idea of making these little jars for more than just place settings. Perfect for hostess gifts, or complementing a fresh food basket for a friend – the options are endless for a homemade buttery treat.

12. Chocolate Honey Butter

Yes, chocolate butter. And no, it’s not Nutella. This spreadable treat is made with real butter, combined with powdered sugar (icing sugar), honey and some unsweetened cocoa powder.

This butter is perfect on some warm southern country biscuits, which, thankfully, this recipe includes instructions on how to make as well. Both the biscuits and the butter can be made homemade with just 7 ingredients (and you likely already have them!).
